Brookhaven Innovation Academy
The Head of School is the chief executive of the school and reports directly to the BIA Board of Directors. This position has direct supervision of the organizational management, faculty and staff employment, and fiscal operations of the school with five primary focus areas:
School Leadership: Develops and maintains operational, financial and instructional sustainability utilizing an approach supported by industry best-practices. Empowers, motivates, evaluates and provides opportunities for development of both instructional and non- instructional faculty and staff. Promotes an integrity-based, solutions-oriented work environment through effective delegation and division of responsibilities and honest evaluation of results.
Mission-Centered Programming: Supports, articulates and perpetuates BIA’s mission, vision, values and goals as a public charter school by fostering an open environment where students, faculty and staff are empowered to fully invest themselves in advancing the mission of BIA.
Student Instruction: Motivates students to become creative thinkers and problem solvers who are oriented toward high academic achievement. Engages parents in the instructional vocation of their child through frequent communication and an ongoing exchange of ideas and information.
Culture: Establishes a community of inclusion for parents, students, faculty and staff, and school partners that supports the goals and mission of BIA.
Accountability: Ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws related to the operational, financial and instructional functions of a public charter school. Communicates to the governing Board the results of student assessments and testing as well as periodic financial and budgetary performance. Works with the Board to create a sustainable model for the school.
o Oversees all key aspects of the school’s operations.
o Leads and models the school’s culture and character.
o Interfaces with the State Charter Schools Commission for charter renewal and other
regulatory and compliance issues.
o Represents BIA to visitors and educators interested in the school model.
o Oversees the operating budget, faculty salaries and benefits.
o Prepares and presents monthly financial, operations and instructional progress reports to
o Ensures building maintenance, safety and cleanliness.
o Establishes a schedule and approves updates to and maintenance of information on the
o Evaluates teachers and administration through the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System
(TKES) and Leader Keys Effectiveness System (LKES). In Collaboration with Board of Directors:
o Establishes a budget.
o Creates and implements long-range planning goals. o Negotiates all contracts and deeds.
o Ensures charter renewal.
o Engages in ongoing Board development.
o Recommends faculty staffing levels, salary and benefits packages, develops and
maintains all employee handbooks, parent/student handbooks, and other publications
setting out policies of the school.
o Communicates regularly with Chair of governing Board. o Attends monthly Board meetings.
Parent Involvement and Community Partnership
o Actively promotes BIA within the community and meets or exceeds student enrollment
o Creates and practices culture of inclusion for parents and students where parental
communication and involvement is a priority.
o Attends all Parent Council meetings and works closely with that body.
o Oversees Parent Education program.
o Builds partnerships with local universities for student teacher positions and instructional
Student Learning and Instructional Leadership
o Serves as the instructional leader and spends time in the classroom to observe the level
and quality of instruction.
o Regularly evaluates the instructional program and related progress and makes strategic
adjustments when necessary.
In Collaboration with Faculty:
o Plans and assesses curriculum and student growth (including supervision of state testing
and interpretation of testing data).
o Ensures consistency and alignment of instruction with BIA’s approved charter
o Works directly with Head of Special Education to supervise and oversee Special
Education services. Attends IEP meetings.
o Supports the growth and improvement of instruction through observation, feedback,
coaching, staff development and other methods.
o Addresses challenges and opportunities of increased ethnic and socio-economic
diversity of students and families.
o Works directly with children to assist them in solving problems, understanding the
consequences of their actions, and developing positive solutions to issues they are struggling with in their classroom, the playground, or with other children.
Professional Development and Human Resource Management
o Makes all employment recommendations.
o Nurtures, supports and mentors the faculty as a team.
o Designs a qualitatively rich staff development and instructional training program by extending invitations to outside educators, encouraging peer-led development, and appointing faculty committees designed to address specific issues.
o Fosters faculty development through individual meetings, self-evaluations and classroom observations by mentor teachers and the Head of School.
o In addition to supervising all faculty members, also supervises Inclusion Specialist, Social-Emotional Curriculum Coordinator, Office Manager, Enrichment Coordinator and Administrative Assistant.
Agreement with and commitment to the academic goals, mission and philosophy of BIA.
Experience demonstrating the ability to be a successful visionary and leader in a senior,
administrative position with a charter school, traditional public school, or other school setting that includes working with a Board of Directors or Trustees, as well as broad reaching experience with faculty and staff for a school.
Demonstrated successful teaching or instructional experience.
Exhibited leadership skills creating a vision and a culture of inclusion in working with parents,
students, constituents, regulators and the community. To fulfill our desire to be a community of inclusion, we are looking for a strong leader who is able to work cohesively with multiple constituencies to bring the best solutions forward for the school and its families.
Master’s degree or higher in education, child development or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
Administrative certification welcomed but not necessary.
Demonstrated success in managing and successfully operating a multi-million dollar budget
and building a sustainable entity.
Experience with Project Based Learning and personalized/blended learning welcomed but not
