Description
SLAM Academy of Atlanta is seeking an elementary school counselor to organize and implement state guidance curriculum by preparing for classroom guidance, group guidance, individual guidance, and peer programs. The counselor will provide immediate responsive services to individuals or parents. Such services may involve information, counseling, consultation, referral, intervention, evaluation or a combination of these areas. The counselor will provide guidance support activities which include program development, staff development, materials development, parent education, testing program, RTI and community relations.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Uses data to develop and inform the school counseling program and evaluates the program’s impact on the school’s instructional goals.
- Collaborates on the development and management of the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator or instructional leader.
- Designs, implements and assesses the guidance curriculum.
- Participates in Student Support Team and 504 meetings to address students behavioral, academic and/or speech concerns.
- Consults/conferences with teachers and parents to address student concerns and needs; provides outside resources to parents/guardians indicating a need for emotional, family, economic, clothing, and/or medical support.
- Communicates and shares the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to stakeholders including students, families and community partners.
- Monitors student attendance to ensure students are attending school regularly; contacts students and parents concerning attendance issues and follows up with written contracts and attendance letters (Attendance Protocol Manager).
- Implements programs to foster positive relationships with families and students.
- Mediates student conflicts.
- Plans, coordinates and provides classroom group guidance sessions to meet the identified guidance and counseling competencies in the areas of academic achievement, career and educational development, and personal and social development.
- Assesses student needs and makes referrals to appropriate school resource personnel, social agencies, community agencies and alternative programs.
- Intervenes during crisis situations and participates on school crisis team.
- Uses the majority of the time (80%) to provide direct services to students through preventive and responsive services, including individual student planning, and uses the remaining time in development and management, system support and accountability
- Prepares students for the transition to the next level: middle school, activities and options.
- Plans and coordinates programs such as career fairs, test preparation, improved/perfect attendance celebrations and other extensions of the counseling program.
- Uses responsive counseling strategies to establish relationships and collaborate with educators, students, families and community partners; these strategies should reflect recognition of and respect for each individual and promote an understanding and appreciation of diverse population and cultures.
- Assists families in obtaining services for their children through an appropriate referral and follow-up process.
- Serves as liaison between the social services agencies (i.e., DCFS) and personnel from the various school systems where wards of the District of Columbia are attending school.
- Assists teachers in understanding their students, including providing and interpreting student data.
- Conducts at minimum a yearly program audit to review the extent and quality of program implementation.
- Prepares and submits a variety of reports and data, to ensure fulfillment of established program requirements.
- Uses all available data, including academic grades, discipline referrals and attendance data, to identify students in need and to deliver services.
- Interprets tests, student data and other assessment results appropriately within the counseling environment for the purpose of developing and implementing academic plans for individual students.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in education or human services (guidance, counseling, etc.) field from a Professional Standards Commission approved accredited college or university required.
- Minimum of three (3) years teaching, counseling, at-risk youth casework or closely related experience is required.
- Must be familiar with the Guidance competencies of academic achievement; personal/social development and career development
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
- Must have Clearance Certificate issued by the GAPSC
- Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC) Service Certificate in School Counseling
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The School Counselor must have strong written and oral communication, be proficient in Microsoft Office, process strong leadership skills, have a strong knowledge in the Georgia counseling curriculum and other federal and state mandated laws. The candidate must possess interpersonal skills and have the ability to create productive and healthy relationships. The School Counselor must demonstrate strong organizational and analytical skills with outstanding attention to detail.
WORK HOURS:
Approximately 25 hours per week
*An established schedule will be worked out between the Principal and Counselor
