Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan paid a visit to Savannah Classical Academy (SCA) on Friday, May 17. During the visit, Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor offered inspirational remarks at the school’s annual Honors and Lower School Bridging Ceremony. The Lieutenant Governor shared his own experiences as a former professional baseball player and entrepreneur. He told students that persistence pays off.
“I want you with this education you’re getting, with these friends you have and these teachers you have, I want y’all to dream big because you can achieve those dreams,” said Lt. Gov. Duncan. “Keep working hard.”
Lt. Gov. Duncan has been an outspoken supporter of public charter schools. He recently championed additional funding for charter school facilities in the state’s FY 2020 budget.
Savannah Classical Academy’s Honors and Lower School Bridging Ceremony was held in the school’s newly restored gymnasium and marks the end of the 2018-19 school year. Attendees also heard presentations given by SCA Director Barry Lollis and Dean of Students Allison Maher.
Savannah Classical Academy currently educates students in grades K-11. The public charter school is authorized by the Savannah-Chatham Board of Public Education and plans to add a grade and expand into a K-12 school during the 2019-2020 school year. In 2018, SCA students received an 80.6 on Georgia’s College and Career Ready Performance Index, outperforming the state and local district. The average state CCRPI score was 76.6; The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System received an overall 2018 CCRPI score of 72.1.
Savannah Classical Academy’s mission is to provide every child with a classical and academically rigorous education while instilling a commitment to civic virtue and moral character. SCA is committed to developing literate and articulate students who will become active, responsible members of the community and will make a positive contribution to society.
