The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) today presented Georgia Governor Nathan Deal with its inaugural Award for Excellence in Leadership. This honor is presented in recognition of Governor Deal and his administration’s prompt action following the disbanding of the Georgia Charter School Commission this past summer.

Amana Academy, one of the state’s highest performing elementary/middle schools, has been selected as the 2011 Coca-Cola Charter School of the Year. The announcement was made today during the Georgia Charter Schools Association State Charter Schools Conference in Macon.
For the first time in the nine-year history of the event, the annual conference of the GCSA will be held outside of metro Atlanta. About 400 charter school supporters are expected to attend the GCSA Charter Schools Conference, Oct. 6 and 7, at the Macon Marriott City Center Hotel. The theme for the Conference, the only statewide gathering of the entire Georgia charter school community, is “Planting, Growing and Sustaining a Quality Charter School.”

Fulton Science Academy Charter Middle School has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2011 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The school will be honored at a formal ceremony in Washington D.C., Nov. 14-15. The Blue Ribbon School Program honors public and private K-12 schools for their academic excellence and ability to help students achieve at very high scholastic levels.
