POSITION SUMMARY
This position promotes health, wellness, and physical fitness among young learners, places a strong emphasis on personal fitness, nutrition, and character development, and reinforces a school culture of respect, responsibility, and achievement. Physical education teachers explicitly plan opportunities for students to challenge their perseverance, personal fitness, and collaboration skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement standards-based PE lesson plans that promote physical fitness, motor skill development, and sportsmanship among elementary students.
- Teach a variety of physical activities, games, and exercises that cater to different skill levels and encourage student participation.
- Assess and monitor student progress, maintaining accurate records of participation, skill development, and fitness assessments.
- Create a safe, structured learning environment, ensuring all activities align with school policies and safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date grade books, track student performance, and provide feedback in accordance with school grading guidelines.
- Promote teamwork, fair play, and social-emotional development through structured activities and cooperative learning experiences.
- Organize and lead school-wide fitness programs, field days, and extracurricular sports activities to encourage school-wide participation in physical activity.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other staff to integrate health and wellness education into interdisciplinary learning experiences.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians, providing updates on student progress and ways to encourage healthy habits at home.
- Maintain and manage PE equipment and facilities, ensuring materials are in good condition and accessible for student use.
- Stay current with best practices in physical education and wellness by participating in professional development opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field is preferred.
- Valid teaching certification or ability to obtain one.
- Experience teaching PE at the elementary level is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of child development, fitness principles, and age-appropriate physical activities.
- Excellent classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to create engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate physical education experiences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience coaching youth sports or leading extracurricular fitness programs.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- Familiarity with state and national PE standards (e.g., SHAPE America).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Indoor and outdoor activity spaces, including gymnasiums, fields, and playgrounds.
- Requires active movement, including standing, running, and demonstrating exercises.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be required for school events and athletic programs.

Vision: Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods.

Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer.
Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.
Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects that weigh as much as 25 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbents may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict.
Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.
Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret, and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understand how to manage stress.
Additional Work Conditions & Physical Abilities: Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed between in-person and various classroom learning environments.
