Initiative Provides Support for New Charter Schools in Georgia

More Georgia families will soon have the opportunity to send their children to a public school that best meets their individual needs. The Georgia Strategic Charter School Growth Initiative will support the expansion, replication, or creation of high-quality public charter schools in communities throughout the state. The initiative will provide technical assistance and grants to support the creation or expansion of ten charter schools by September 2023. In addition, the initiative will offer information sessions and a new dedicated website to allow Georgians to learn more about public charter schools and their public charter school options. 

GCSA Announces Atlanta-Focused Advocacy Communications Director

The Georgia Charter Schools Association is excited to welcome Beverly James as our Director of Advocacy Communications. In this new Atlanta-focused role, Beverly will work directly with charter schools in the Atlanta Public Schools district and state charter schools with students living in the APS attendance zone. Also, she will manage existing, and build new relationships with Atlanta elected officials, stakeholders and partners. Beverly is incredibly excited to use her depth of experience and passion for public education to advocate for children in the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

The Georgia Charter Schools Association is pleased to announce Gregg Stevens as our Vice President of New School Development.

Mr. Stevens is an attorney with extensive experience assisting charter schools and charter support organizations through complex regulatory and legal problems to better enable schools and educators to focus on student success and academic achievement.  Mr. Stevens comes to GCSA from private practice and previously served as Deputy Director and General Counsel for the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia and Deputy General Counsel for the Georgia Department of Education.

Georgia’s Public Charter High Schools Surpass State Graduation Rate

ATLANTA—Georgia’s public charter schools are improving the state’s overall public school system by ensuring more Georgia students graduate from high school. According to data released from the Georgia Department of Education, the collective 2021 graduation rate for Georgia’s charter schools is 89.1%. That’s more than five percentage points higher than the state graduation rate (83.7%). That percentage increases when brick-and-mortar (non-virtual) public charter schools are compared to the state average. Georgia’s non-virtual public charter schools outperformed the state graduation rate by almost nine percentage points—92.5% compared to 83.7%.
