Georgia Charter Schools Association applauds Gov. Nathan Deal for signing House Bill 430 on Thursday. Under the new law, charter schools will receive dedicated facilities funding for the first time in Georgia’s history.

Georgia Charter Schools Association (GCSA) is pleased to welcome Aarti Sharma as Vice President of New School Development. In her new position, she will oversee the only charter school incubator in the state of Georgia. Georgia Charter Schools Association believes Sharma will bring her expertise in state and local laws and the authorization process to GCSA’s successful incubator program.

Georgia’s public charter schools will receive dedicated facilities funding for the first time ever under legislation approved on Thursday by the Georgia General Assembly. House Bill 430 also creates new minimum standards for districts that authorize charter schools. The provisions, which were included in House Bill 430, were based on recommendations made by the Governor’s Education Reform Commission in 2015 and strongly supported by the Georgia Charter Schools Association and numerous education reform organizations.

“This legislation is a positive step forward for public charter schools in Georgia and will help them ensure the best possible educational experience for tens of thousands of children,” said Tony Roberts, president and CEO of the Georgia Charter Schools Association. “We want to thank Representative Buzz Brockway and Senator Fran Millar for their leadership on this important issue and the members in both chambers who put children first and voted yes on this important legislation.”

The purpose of the town hall is for panelists to discuss what charter schools and other school choice options mean for black and minority families in Georgia, Atlanta and the nation. This dialogue comes just before Martin Luther King Day in the heart of Atlanta’s historic civil rights community and is particularly timely due to the recent Charter School Moratorium Resolution approved by the NAACP’s National Board of Directors.
