On May 4 2015, GCSA and other education advocates were asked to make a presentation to the School Choice Subcommittee of Georgia’s Education Reform Commission. GCSA’s president and CEO, Dr. Tony Roberts facilitated the presentation. Lisa Grover, senior director of state advocacy for the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, provided a broad national view of chartering and where Georgia stands in comparison to other states around the nation. Ehab Jaleel, executive director of Amana Academy, discussed facilities funding inequities facing Georgia charter schools and offered solutions to address the issue. Lisa McDonald, executive director of Brighten Academy, offered insights on the impact of poor authorizer practices on charter schools. Allen Mueller, executive director of GCSA’s New Schools For Georgia, provided committee members with a better understanding of the importance of incubating successful charter schools and the resources needed to accomplish this goal.
