Eighth graders in all of Georgia’s public schools saw a slight increase in their End of Grade
math scores on the Georgia Milestones in 2018. The percentage of eighth-grade students who scored proficient or higher on the test went up by 0.1 percentage points. The score is a key indicator of whether students are ready for higher-level math in high school.
State data also show the state’s third-graders in outperformed proficient or better on the End of Grade English Language Arts test. State scores for third-grade students rose by 0.9 percentage points. National data show that children who are unable to read by the third grade far less likely to graduate from high school.
However, only 37 percent of third-grade students scored on grade level or above in English Language Arts, and approximately 35 percent of eighth-grade students were proficient in Math. Atlanta Public Schools
Four APS charter schools were among the top 10 schools for third-grade students who were proficient or above in English Language Arts:

Wesley International Charter School – 59.6%
Westside Atlanta Charter School – 59.5%
Atlanta Neighborhood Charter – 59.1%

KIPP Strive Academy had the second highest percentage of eighth-grade students who were proficient or above in math. Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School, KIPP WAYS, Charles R. Drew Charter School and the Kindezi School scored in the top 10 in eighth grade math.

Bibb County
Academy for Classical Education had the highest English Language Arts score for third grade English language arts in Bibb County.

Academy for Classical Education also had the second highest percentage of third-grade students reading at or above grade level.

The Museum School of Avondale Estates had the second highest percentage of third-grade students in DeKalb County who scored proficient or above in English Language Arts. The Globe Academy was in the top ten DeKalb County elementary schools for third graders who were proficient or above in English Language Arts. The Museum School of Avondale Estates and the Globe Academy were also in the top ten DeKalb County Schools for the percentage of third-grade students reading at or above grade level.

DeKalb Academy of Technology and Environment (DATE) had the highest percentage of eighth-grade students who scored at or above proficient on the Georgia Milestones. Leadership Preparatory Academy was in the top five schools in DeKalb County for eighth graders who were proficient or above in Math.

Brighten Academy was in the top five Douglas County schools for percentage of third-grade students who were proficient or higher in English Language Arts.

Fulton Academy of Science and Technology students were among the top ten Fulton County schools for third graders that scored proficient or above on third grade English Language Arts.

General Highlights:
- Majority of state charter schools increased the percentage of students scoring Proficient or above on EOG Milestones in ELA and Math from 2017 to 2018.
- State charter schools increased the percentage of students scoring Proficient or above on majority of EOC tested subjects from 2017 to 2018.
- More than half of state charter schools outperformed* their attendance zone in at least 50% of subject/grade level combinations on the Milestone EOGs
- International Charter School of Atlanta, Pataula Charter Academy, Resurgence Hall Charter School, School for Arts-Infused Learning (SAIL) and Utopian Academy for the Arts all outperformed their attendance zone in all subjects and grade bands on the Georgia Milestones exams.
