2025 GCSA Champion for Children Awards

L to R: Rep. Ed Setzler, Sen. Elena Parent, and GCSA President and CEO Bonnie Holliday. Rep. Will Wade is not pictured.

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the Georgia Charter Schools Association recognized four of Georgia’s top charter school advocates during GCSA’s annual Holiday Party and Celebration of Advocates at Zoo Atlanta.

GCSA presented Sen. Ed Setzler, Sen. Elena Parent, Rep. Will Wade, and Rep. Sheila Jones with GCSA Champion for Children Awards for their longtime support and commitment to children and Georgia’s public charter schools. Read more about each of the award winners below:

Rep. Will Wade, District 9, Governor’s Floor Leader
Rep. Will Wade has played a vital role in supporting Georgia’s charter schools. As a trusted colleague and valuable thought partner, he consistently offers insight, feedback, and guidance to help strengthen policies that expand opportunities for students. He understands that Georgia’s children need high-quality public school options now, and he has been a steadfast advocate for both the 65,000 students currently enrolled in charter schools and the 21,000 students on waitlists. His dedication and leadership have helped ensure that more children across the state can access the education they deserve.

Rep. Sheila Jones, District 60
Rep. Sheila Jones has long been a steadfast supporter of charter schools. While charter school initiatives were not always widely embraced by Georgia’s House Democrats in the past, Rep. Jones has championed them, helping to build greater support over time. It is never easy to push back against one’s peers, yet she has done so in the best interest of Georgia’s children. Her willingness to stand firm, even when it is challenging, demonstrates both courage and commitment to ensuring students have access to the best possible educational opportunities.

Sen. Elena Parent, District 44
Sen. Elena Parent has long been a champion for Georgia’s charter schools. As Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus, she has led her colleagues with both conviction and expertise, consistently supporting initiatives that strengthen the state’s public education system. Known for her deep understanding of policy, careful analysis of legislation, and commitment to engaging directly with school leaders, Sen. Parent has been a trusted partner for charter schools across the state.

Rep. Ed Setlzer, District 37
Rep. Ed Setzler has been a steadfast supporter of Georgia’s charter schools for more than 15 years. Known for his dedication, tenacity, and commitment to equity, he has consistently advocated for policies that expand opportunities for charter school students across the state. His leadership and partnership have challenged colleagues and organizations alike to think bigger and aim higher in support of children’s education. Through his tireless efforts, countless students and families have gained access to high-quality public school options they might not otherwise have had.

GCSA is proud to honor these leaders for their dedication, vision, and unwavering commitment to Georgia’s charter school students. Their advocacy and leadership continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of children and families across the state.
