APS Charter Enrollment Climbs
A new enrollment share report released this week by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools found that 17 percent of all students enrolled in Atlanta Public Schools attend a public charter school. That’s up from 16 percent the previous year. With 8,880 students, the school system is now ranked 48th out of the top 50 school districts with the highest total number of charter school students. In the previous report, the school district total did not rank in the top 50.
Georgia Charter School Enrollment Triples in the Past Decade
Since the report’s first release in 2006, national charter school enrollment has more than tripled, growing from one million to more than three million students. That’s also true in Georgia. In 2006, 23,612 Georgia students were enrolled in a charter school. During the 2016-2017 school year, there were 78,330 charter school students in the state. That’s a more than 230 percent increase in Georgia charter school students!
