Peter Ulrich, Principal of Tybee Island Maritime Academy (TIMA), was awarded the Charter School Leader of the Year Award during the Georgia Charter School Association’s annual conference in Atlanta on Wednesday, March 13.
“I am deeply honored to be named Georgia Charter School Leader of the Year by the Georgia Charter Schools Association,” said Ulrich. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire charter school community, including our colleagues, students, families, and supporters. Together, we have worked tirelessly to foster a common belief that every student in Georgia can thrive and reach their fullest potential. I am incredibly humbled by this award and grateful for the opportunity to serve such an amazing community!”
Ulrich’s leadership shines through in his exceptional efforts to cultivate a positive and effective school culture that supports both students and staff at TIMA. One of Ulrich’s key strategies is his emphasis on community integration. By involving community partners in education, he not only enriches students’ learning experiences but also strengthens economic development in the area. This collaborative approach equips students with essential skills for the modern world while fostering a sense of belonging and engagement within the broader community.
Furthermore, he demonstrates a deep commitment to ensuring access to education for all students by providing transportation at the school’s own expense. This proactive measure not only removes barriers to learning but also contributes to a culture of inclusivity and support, where every student is valued and given the opportunity to thrive.
In addition to his focus on students, Ulrich prioritizes empowering teachers and staff. By championing staff autonomy and collaboration, he fosters a culture of innovation and experimentation. Teachers feel supported and encouraged to design authentic learning experiences, take risks in their teaching methods, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the school’s programs and initiatives.
The positive impact of his leadership is evident in the high staff retention rates at TIMA. The fact that 100% of staff that are remaining local to the area are returning to their positions for the second year in a row speaks volumes about the supportive and collaborative environment he has cultivated. This strong sense of camaraderie and loyalty among staff members further enhances the school culture and ultimately benefits students’ learning experiences.
Under Ulrich’s visionary leadership, TIMA has achieved remarkable academic success, solidifying its reputation as an exemplary charter school. Ulrich’s strategic vision and innovative initiatives have positively impacted academic performance and overall success within the school community.
One key aspect of Ulrich’s leadership is the implementation of the TIMA project-based learning (PBL) Framework and Maritime Program. These initiatives have transformed the learning experience for students, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and interdisciplinary learning. By integrating project-based learning and real-world applications, TIMA has created a dynamic educational environment that empowers students to excel academically and prepares them for future success.
Additionally, Ulrich’s emphasis on strong family engagement has played a pivotal role in TIMA’s success. Through intentional programming such as Monthly Parent Plug-Ins, End of Quarter Showcases, and the Family Engagement Committee, TIMA has cultivated a supportive and involved school community. The TIMA Ambassador Program and “Love Your People” initiatives further strengthen connections between the school and families, fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration.
TIMA’s academic achievements speak volumes about Ulrich’s leadership and vision. In the 2023 Georgia Milestones Assessments, TIMA ranked in the top 5 in the district for “Proficient Learner and Above” across all grades and subjects. Notable highlights include 1st place in 3rd-grade reading above grade level and 2nd place in 3rd-grade English Language Arts (ELA) and 6th-grade Math % Proficient Learner & Above. TIMA outperformed Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and the state in various domains, including content mastery, progress, closing gaps, and readiness.
Through innovative initiatives, strong family engagement, and a commitment to student-centered learning, Ulrich has created a thriving educational community where students thrive academically and socially. Under his guidance, TIMA continues to set the standard for excellence in charter school education.
