Gavin Mills, a senior at Furlow Charter School, has been selected to serve on the 2023-2024 Student Advisory Council for State School Superintendent Richard Woods. This year, Superintendent Woods chose nearly 70 students for the prestigious honor.
Members of the Student Advisory Council will meet with Superintendent Woods throughout the school year to provide feedback on the impact of state policies in the classroom. They will also participate in service projects and serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors to their respective schools.
Those serving on Superintendent Woods’ Student Advisory Council are selected annually through a competitive application process. This year, students who applied wrote essays addressing a wide variety of educational issues, including curriculum and graduation requirements; the impact of federal and state-mandated assessments in the classroom; the importance of teacher recruitment and retention efforts to students’ classroom experience; and access to opportunities and resources for students in rural areas. The council includes at least four students from every Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) region in Georgia.
