More than 500 parents, students and community members attended the Metro Atlanta Charter School Expo at Ivy Preparatory Academy on Saturday, Jan. 25. Georgia Charter Schools Association and GeorgiaCAN hosted this crucial event for Atlanta area families. The purpose of the Metro Atlanta Charter School Expo was to match public charter schools in Atlanta, Clayton, Fulton and DeKalb counties with families interested in enrolling their children for the 2020 school year.
“I think this is awesome,” Tiquicha Harris, a Fulton County resident, said. “I’m new to learning about charter schools. I didn’t know what was out there and how many are out there, so to be able to come and see what is offered is amazing.”
Harris came to the event looking for a diverse charter school with small class sizes and more structure for her son.
Attendees like Harris were able to visit with representatives from more than 40 public charter schools.
“Outreach is important to us,” Chuck Meadows, Executive Director of Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School said, “We are a neighborhood school, but we want to make that sure our message and our approach gets out to as many people as possible. Diversity is really important to us, and we have a strong goal of increasing and maintaining diversity in our student body. This a great opportunity to meet a group of folks that may not have heard of us before but have a great chance to be part of the ANCS school family.”
The event kicked off Georgia’s celebration of National School Choice Week. The purpose of National School Choice Week is to raise awareness about the K-12 education options available to families in communities across the nation.
GCSA wants to continue to inform parents about their options by sharing your school’s enrollment information on social media. To share your enrollment information, email Michelle Wirth at mwirth@gacharters.org or call 470-236-0671.
