On Monday, Oct. 22, Ivy Prep Academy at Kirkwood held a special event for grandparents as part of Annual Education Advocacy Awareness Month. Event sponsors included the Community Empowerment Foundation, In School Spirit and Lillie’s Foundation.
Grandparents who attended were asked created a vision board to demonstrate what their educational wishes are for their grandchildren and the children in their communities. Participants were also asked what kind of support is needed to assist local children with improved educational outcomes.
Participants were given information on family engagement and community resources. They also learned ways to advocate for their families and communities through personal storytelling writing letters, making phone calls and attending meetings.
Event speakers included: Latonya Winters-Buford, Parent Engagement Liaison, DeKalb County School District; Danielle Stewart, Founder and President, In School Spirit; Jason B. Allen, Board Chairman, Ivy Preparatory Academy and Steven Quinn, State Outreach Coordinator, GeorgiaCAN.
