Georgia Charter Schools Association congratulates the class of 2021! We are excited to recognize Jelayla McCollum, a graduate of Statesboro STEAM Academy as an outstanding senior. Jelayla was nominated by Corliss Reese, Director/Superintendent of Statesboro STEAM.
What are the student’s plans after graduation?
After high school, Jelayla plans to continue attending Ogeechee Technical College in Statesboro. She will then pursue other opportunities. Jelayla is currently working on an associate’s degree in Business Management.
Why does this student deserve recognition?
Jelayla deserves recognition because she graduated early from Statesboro STEAM Academy. She is also the first Black valedictorian in the school’s 18 year history.
How has attending a Georgia public charter school benefited the student?
Jelayla says attending a public charter school has benefited her in numerous ways. According to Jelayla, Statesboro STEAM Academy made learning fun while allowing her to complete all of her coursework fast and efficiently. Jelayla is grateful for the relationships she built. She says teachers at Statesboro STEAM care about their students’ well-being and future plans.
