16 students from Mountain Education Charter High School (MECHS) traveled to Washington D.C. during the week of Sept. 11. The annual all-expenses-paid trip is designed as an educational experience to help students gain a better understanding of our nation’s history, governmental structure and operations.
During the trip, students visited the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian museums and several national monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial. Three students were also selected after an essay submission to lay a wreath at the Tomb of Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
One student per MEHCS location was chosen by administrators to represent their site on the trip. To be selected for the trip students had to be a senior in good academic standing, have no discipline concerns, never have traveled to Washington D.C. previously and have the ability to serve as a good representative of the school.
The trip was funded through generous donations from the Dahlonega Ministerial Association, the Cleveland Kiwanis Club and the Dahlonega American Legion.
