National Charter Schools Week is almost here! This year, National Charter Schools Week takes place May 7-11. To celebrate this important week, the Georgia Charter Schools Association plans to host a special presentation of the documentary STEP on Wednesday, May 9 at KIPP Atlanta Collegiate. The program will include the movie screening and a step performance from one of our very own member schools. Stay tuned for more details.
STEP is a documentary film that focuses on the story of a girls’ high-school step team Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women in Baltimore. The all-female charter school works to reshape the futures of its students by making it an objective for every member of their senior class to gain acceptance to and graduate from college. The school’s teachers, coaches, counselors and teammates all have a positive impact on the lives of step team members, and the young women on the step team learn to thrive as they work to overcome adversities.
As your school considers how to commemorate National Charter Schools Week, GCSA encourages member schools to hold a rally, invite elected officials to their school and to tell positive student, teacher and parent stories on social media. If you are already planning an event or a legislative visit, please contact Andrea Arroyo, GCSA Vice President of Policy and Advocacy, at aarroyo@gacharters.org.
