Atlanta Unbound Academy opened for its inaugural academic year this past fall. The state authorized charter school seeks to provide a culturally relevant, rigorous, and empowering education to students in Fulton County and throughout Georgia. To meet the needs of students and their families, Atlanta Unbound Academy held a fundraiser on Juneteenth, a holiday to celebrate the end of slavery in the U.S. Through the help of parents, community members, grants, and matching dollars from corporate sponsors, the school raised a total of $90,000 to provide students with computers, food, instructional support, supplies and mental health resources.
In the classroom, Atlanta Unbound Academy teachers utilize small group instruction and focus on relationship building with students. The school’s educators review classroom data on a continual basis to ensure students are mastering state standards. They also meet bi-weekly with parents. The school’s founder and governing board sought to create a place where students feel free to express their feelings about what’s happening in the world around them. Educators at Atlanta Unbound Academy work to instill self-confidence and deliver an educational experience where a student’s culture is not only acknowledged but celebrated and valued.
