On Tuesday, Sept. 25, SLAM Academy of Atlanta held a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the school’s first year of operation. Winfield Murray, Assistant Chief of Staff for Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, addressed the crowd of parents, board members, community supporters, Georgia Charter Schools Association employees and representatives from the State Charter Schools Commission. Murray told those in attendance Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is committed to ensuring Atlanta students receive a high-quality education.
Dr. Lonnie White, SLAM Academy of Atlanta Principal; Karen Womack, SLAM Academy of Atlanta Board Chair; Natalie Howell, Fulton County Commissioner and Angelia Howell, Academica Atlanta Managing Director, also gave remarks. Dr. White told attendees about an inspirational chant he leads every morning with students to remind them that their efforts make a difference. The chant is called TEAM: Together Every Achievement Matters.
SLAM Academy of Atlanta opened its doors for the first time in August. The school currently has 75 Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students enrolled. The tuition-free public charter school’s mission is to provide an engaging, challenging, and supportive learning environment that will motivate all students to be the best they can be in and out of the classroom and prepare them for future success.
