Schools were included in the list of public schools being lauded for academic improvement, achievement in the 2009-10 school year
(Jan. 7) ATLANTA – Eighteen (18) charter schools were recognized by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and the state Department of Education for outstanding academic achievement during the 2009-2010 school year.
The schools are among nearly 350 public schools in Georgia acknowledged under Georgia’s Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS), which judges schools based on their performance on state curriculum exams and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status.
“We couldn’t be more proud of the hard work and efforts displayed by the students, parents, teachers and administrators at these charter schools,” said Tony Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of the Georgia Charter Schools Association, the state’s only non-profit membership organization supporting and advocating for quality charter schools. “These schools illustrate why quality charter schools are an integral part of improving the condition of the public educational system in Georgia and throughout the nation.
“Simply put,” Roberts said, “when more communities are able to craft charter schools that serve their specific needs, and when those schools are properly funded and outfitted with dedicated instructors and administrators who are allowed flexibility and autonomy in meeting the needs of their students, our public education system will become vastly improved.”
The schools were awarded on four levels (platinum, gold, silver and bronze) in two categories – greatest gains, for schools that showed the greatest improvement in scores on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) or the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT), and highest performance, for schools that demonstrated the highest achievement on those tests.
