Atlanta, GA, August 28, 2012 – U.S. Representative John Lewis (D-GA 5th District) will address scholars at the all-boys Fulton Leadership Academy charter school on Thursday, August 30, 10:00 am, at Fulton Leadership Academy, 4141 Old Fairburn Road, Atlanta, GA 30349.
“It is a tremendous honor to have a living civil rights legend meet and inspire our scholars,” said Dr. Gavin Samms, Principal of Fulton Leadership Academy. Congressman Lewis is a shining example of everything we teach our young men at Fulton Leadership Academy – character, commitment, leadership and fortitude.”
Fulton Leadership Academy (FLA) is a state charter school with a mission to empower young men in grades 6-12 to become productive civic leaders. The curriculum offer a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and a thematic approach that integrates experiences with aviation and aeronautics. The school is comitted to building character through, communication skills, decision-making, public speaking, team building, negotiating skills, and a rites of passage program.
In its first year, Fulton Leadership Academy exceeded all state objective in all subjects for CRCT test performance, making it one of the best public middle schools in South Fulton. Ironically, the high achieving school was twice denied a petition when it went before the Fulton County School Board. Ultimately, Fulton Leadership Academy was approved by the Georgia Charter Schools Commission. When that body was declared unconstitutional last spring, Governor Nathan Deal stepped in to provide emergency funding for FLA and 7 other “state charter schools.”
Like many of Georgia’s successful public charter schools, demand for admission to FLA exceeds the number of available seats. The school is fully enrolled for 2012-2013 and has a lengthy waiting list.
