GCSA is pleased to announce that First Lady Sandra Deal and newly elected State Schools Superintendent Richard L. Woods, will be featured speakers on education at the 2015 Charter Schools Leadership Conference.
Mrs. Deal will offer remarks on her hopes and goals for education. A retired Georgia public school teacher, Mrs. Deal taught for more than 15 years in Hall County. She has made literacy one of her top priorities, launching the “Read Across Georgia” tour which has taken her to 159 counties and 181 school districts to encourage student reading. To date, Mrs. Deal has visited more than 320 schools, including KIPP STRIVE Primary, encouraging students to love reading and become “life-long learners.” Like her husband, the First Lady believes a good education is the key to future success.
Richard L. Woods is a former classroom teacher with more than 22 years of experience in K-12 education.A graduate of Fitzgerald High School, Woods holds a Bachelor’s in secondary education social studies from Kennesaw State University and a Master’s in educational leadership and supervision from Valdosta State University. Mr. Woods worked for the Irwin County School System for over twenty-two years.
During the course of his campaign Mr. Woods completed a GCSA survey on chartering. His responses indicated full throated support for broad flexibility and autonomy for startup charters, for autonomous charter school governance, equitable funding, and a willingness to recommend sanctions on districts of state authorizers not complying with Georgia’s charter school laws. We consider Mr. Woods to be a friend of charter schools and K-12 innovation and look forward to his Welcome Remarks when the Conference kicks off at 8:15 am.
Plan to attend this important annual gathering of Georgia’s charter schools community and be with us as we honor the outstanding school leaders, teachers and other advocates who have impacted our movement this year. And don’t miss the announcement of the 2015 GCSA Charter School of the Year at the Awards Luncheon! January 30th, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
