This back-to-school season brings more than new backpacks and bus routes. Georgia families will soon have five new public charter schools to choose from: Academy for Innovation in Medicine, The Meliora School, Northwest Georgia Charter Academy, REACH Public Schools, and Tapestry Public Charter School Clayton.
Each school was approved by the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia (SCSC) after a comprehensive application and review process, with some going through GCSA’s Charter School Incubator. Local educators and community leaders built these schools to answer real needs in their communities, from Georgia’s healthcare workforce shortage to students who need a school schedule that fits their lives. All five are public, tuition-free, and open to all students.

Here’s a closer look at each school.
Academy for Innovation in Medicine (AIM)
Located at 2450 Piedmont Road in Atlanta, one block from the Lindbergh Center MARTA station, the Academy for Innovation in Medicine is a tuition-free health sciences middle and high school. The school will serve grades 6 and 9 in its first year and grow from there.
AIM was designed with a specific problem in mind: Georgia is projected to have more than 100,000 open healthcare positions by 2030. The school’s answer is to “grow our own,” starting in sixth grade. Students learn in medical simulation labs, train alongside working healthcare professionals, and can begin paid healthcare work in tenth grade. AIM will be the first public charter school in Georgia to fully leverage the state’s Accelerated Career Diploma, which means students can graduate with a high school diploma, an Associate’s Degree, and industry-recognized healthcare certifications, all at no cost, before they turn 18.

The Meliora School
The Meliora School is Gwinnett County’s first charter school serving grades 6–12. The name comes from the Latin for “better,” and the school treats it as a promise: every learner pursuing better every day.
Meliora offers personalized, mastery-based learning, where students move at their own pace and only progress once they’ve truly mastered key concepts. Project-based coursework integrates entrepreneurship and computer science, and juniors and seniors can earn industry-recognized Google Certifications. The school partners with the Khan Schools Network, and demand is already strong: more than 100 families enrolled within the first 10 days of enrollment.

Northwest Georgia Charter Academy
Northwest Georgia Charter Academy brings a new public school option to Cave Spring in Floyd County, with pre-enrollment for the 2026–2027 school year open now.
The school’s approach is summed up in its motto: hands-on learning, real-world impact, lifelong success. Community is central to the model, with local business partnerships, volunteer opportunities, and partners including Georgia Northwestern Technical College and the City of Cave Spring helping connect classroom learning to the region students call home.

REACH Public Schools
Now enrolling in Savannah, REACH Public Schools is a free public charter high school serving grades 9–12, built for students whose lives don’t fit a traditional school schedule.
Whether a student is working, managing health needs, caring for family, or simply learns best in a smaller environment, REACH meets them where they are. Students move through coursework at their own pace with personalized schedules, self-guided learning, and small-group classes, paired with consistent support from adults who know them and check in often. Flexibility isn’t an add-on at REACH; it’s the foundation of the entire model.

Tapestry Public Charter School Clayton
Opening in fall 2026 at 142 College Street in Jonesboro, Tapestry Clayton will serve grades 6–12 and is open to any student living in Clayton County. Admission is by open lottery, with no fees and no tests.
Tapestry Clayton extends the Tapestry model already at work at the school’s DeKalb campus: neurotypical students and students on the autism spectrum learn side by side, held to the same high expectations. As the school puts it, “We don’t lower the bar. We raise the support.” Co-teaching is central to the culture, with teachers planning, problem-solving, and celebrating students together.
